Final Animation | Update # 45

I am generally content with the outcome of the animation in terms of its look and feel. However, the process itself posed significant challenges and stress. Initially, I formed a team to assist with tasks such as compositing, sound design, and creating posters, but unfortunately, they withdrew their support merely four days before the submission deadline. Unfortunately, luck was not on my side as I also fell ill during this period. To compound these issues, I encountered numerous technical problems, including multiple crashes on my laptop.

Consequently, I lost compiled files, and my teammate, Hani Qureshi, experienced a problem with their iPad not charging. The fact that my team and I were located in different countries also introduced avoidable challenges that could have been resolved had we been working together in person. As the workload on my end grew, I found myself falling behind the schedule outlined in my Gantt chart, ultimately resulting in a delayed submission. Despite enduring a range of emotions, I managed to gather my strength and am relieved that I persevered instead of giving up. I acknowledge there are scenes and transitions that I could have enhanced had I possessed more time, but certain segments remained incomplete.

These include the transition between the children’s imaginative world and reality, as well as the scene featuring Debra Joy’s use of the slingshot. Regrettably, due to time constraints, I had to omit several scenes from my original animatic plan. I resorted to watching multiple After Effects tutorials to devise a lava effect that would digest Soby. While my execution fell short of my initial aspirations, I did manage to acquire new skills through this process. I’m proud of this animation because over the past three months my work has improved quite a lot. I was able to make the characters recreate the synergy with their voice actors. The learning process was tough, but it was fruitful as it developed and polished my skills. I believe that both children and adults will resonate in this narrative. The diverse and captivating settings, as well as the well-developed characters, should maintain the audience’s engagement. The interactive campaign concept, involving the audience by encouraging them to contribute their memories to shape an episode’s concept, promises to sustain their interest. I invite you to view the final product and hope you like it.

Creative Development (Final Edit and Sound Design) | Update # 44

As the deadline reaches near and curtains are about to close, so is my MA and with that I am nearly done with the animation. After a painstaking process of trying to render out the scenes, I am ready to do the final edit on a project that I have been working for the past 3 months day and nights and as being a person who is very critical of his work I do believe that this is portfolio worthy.

Below is my final time and a work in progress for the sound design.

Deviating from the actual blog, this is more about the final edit and sound. Once I have all my shots lined up, it turned out I over animated ( well made extra footage) and the time duration exceeded 3 mins, so I had to make very conscious cuts only to realise that some scenes were indeed pointless. Sound design was the most fun part, as I got to make original comical sound effects instead of downloading them. All though I do admit I used envato elements heavily for this and in this blog I will also list all the 3rd party material used.

New learning over the project | Update # 43

The past three months have been a significant period of learning for me. I can observe a profound transformation between my prior animations and my most recent one. I adopted a novel working approach that involved tracing shots from a 3D model. In this animation, the background itself assumed a character-like role, prompting me to invest considerable attention in its execution. Regrettably, I fell short of achieving the exact ambiance I had envisioned. To address this, I devised a color palette intended to enhance the prominence of the background. After engaging in a series of trial-and-error attempts, I eventually achieved success in this endeavor. Nonetheless, a sense of incompleteness persisted.
In response, I experimented with various brushes to imbue the scenes with a watercolor-like texture. Drawing inspiration from beloved cartoons such as Titoef, I honed my ability to elevate the visual quality. As I progressively introduced finer details such as cracks, brushstrokes, shadows, and patches onto the walls, the overall composition aligned more closely with my original vision.
A notable milestone was my inaugural experience in animating dialogues, a challenge compounded by the complexity of rendering children’s dialogues as a novice. During voice actor recordings, the differing energies perplexed me, prompting me to investigate the cause of this discrepancy. Subsequently, I recognized that distinct approaches were required: animating some frames at threes, others at twos, and some at ones, to capture the unique enthusiasm and attributes of each voice actor. This methodology not only brought out individual character traits but also enhanced my proficiency in digital drawing through distinctive character designs and exaggerated expressions.
A breakthrough occurred as I delved into the art of compositing scenes using only two colors, purple and orange. After several iterations, I mastered the technique to accentuate the interaction between the flowing lava and the background elements.
I owe a debt of gratitude to my teammate Hani, whose assistance enabled me to grasp the intricacies of creating and rendering 3D models using Sketchup. Furthermore, I acquired insights into manipulating the model to achieve specific exaggerated shots.
Given the extended duration of the project, succumbing to distractions and laziness posed a tangible risk. However, through guidance from my professor, I acquired proficiency in devising both a Pipeline chart and a Gantt chart. These tools empowered me to maintain a disciplined schedule and a clear grasp of time allocation throughout the project.

Promotional Video | Update #42

In this week I decided to take break from the main animation. The reason was to shed some time on the promotional videos. These videos are also one of the requirements of this project. Earlier I had made draft of the look and feel that I desire for this. The weather in this week also complemented the desired output.
During the process I have also turned my room into a studio. You will only get this kind of feeling from a young professional or a student. No wonder it is hard for anyone to match the passion of a young enthusiast. My worry is why the passion drains while you mature. At best I think the quantum should only go up.
Right now I have very professional kind of a setup inside my room. The desire to do it this way was driven after I saw some of the people who took it rather casually. I on the other hand wants to do it the right way. For that, I have made the background feel using Lumion Pro. For reference, people use green and grey screen for this.

Getting it all together | Update # 41

This would be rather brief so I may not take away the thunder of my work. For everyone’s knowledge I have started transforming my work into composite using the aftereffects. It is shaping up beautifully and for that reason I am very happy and satisfied of the way things are going. Initially I wanted smear transitions while the camera pans or zooms in or out, but since I am running out of time I had to devise another way as I cannot do those manually. When I talked to my software teacher he told me that Adobe Animate and Toon Boom Harmony usually do it for you it’s like an effect.

I found a tutorial online about how you can do a fast smear zoom pan and it will give off the same effect. All we needed to add was an effect called CC Motion tile and a little bit of fast box blur sprinkled on top and hence you get this effect. [1]

I am pretty satisfied with effect. As I said before as the deadline speeds towards us this will do.

Project Management 5/5 | Update # 40

Project management, problems solved, team handle, time management, details in background not vivible of time allocation throughout the project.

The process of this project itself posed significant challenges and stress.

Out of the three moths I was stuck at the animatic the longest trying to improve the camera angles and transitions whilst removing unnecessary snippets that were making the video longer. I watched some mockumentaries to improve my shots, learned to manipulate different angles, etc. I had to keep revising my Gannt chart because I was short on time.

Consequently, I lost compiled files, and my teammate, Hani Qureshi, experienced a problem with their iPad not charging.

The fact that my team and I were in different countries also introduced avoidable challenges that could have been resolved had we been working together in person. I referred back to my pipeline chart as I had to make a conscious decision as how to move ahead inspite a lot of set back. At the moment the question is about quality over quantity. I was suggested by my Professor that I should convert it into a short 90s trailer, but I am taking a risk and making it a bit longer sort of like a preview of the episode.

I worked very hard to make the backgrounds pop out. However, when compositing I realised that it could have been avoided in the lava scenes as the lights and darks were only created by purple and orange and all the previous details were not visible.

While my execution fell short of my initial aspirations. Since there was very little time I haphazardly made it so it’s not what I aspired it to be.

Creative Development | Update# 39

The first thing I want to share is that while progress might be moving at a pace that’s more of a stroll than a sprint, the result is nothing short of superb. It’s a reminder that in the world of animation, perfection is a gradual evolution – a journey where every step taken is a step towards excellence.

The heart of this progress lies in the animation artifact that’s been taking shape before my eyes. Each frame, each movement, and every detail contribute to the symphony of storytelling that’s playing out on my canvas. And let me tell you, the visual spectacle that’s unfolding is nothing short of captivating.

I’ve found myself immersed in a world of experimentation, particularly within the realm of After Effects. Textures, techniques, and effects have become my playground as I strive to infuse each scene with a unique touch that resonates with the narrative. The beauty of experimentation lies in the unexpected discoveries – those moments when a technique you’ve never tried before yields stunning results.

However, there’s a twist in this tale. Time, that ever-elusive companion, has been tapping its foot impatiently. With a mere three weeks left until the finish line, some scenes are reluctantly finding their place on the cutting room floor. It’s a tough decision, one that’s not made lightly, but it’s a decision that keeps the bigger picture in mind.

The world of animation is a canvas where creativity flows boundlessly, but it’s also a realm where deadlines are a reality. As much as I’d love to craft every scene to perfection, the constraints of time remind me that sometimes we need to make choices that allow us to present the best version of our work within the given timeframe. There were some not so complicated shot so instead of adding a smear I went with an anime style approach and added speed lines, they worked even better than I believed them to be

But fear not! Those scenes that are temporarily set aside are not forgotten. They’re earmarked for the future, waiting to be lovingly woven into the animation tapestry once the clock isn’t ticking so loudly. It’s a promise to myself – an assurance that my creative visions will see the light of day when the time is right.

As I share this work-in-progress update with you, I’m reminded of the beauty of transparency in creative journeys. The journey isn’t always a sprint towards the finish line; it’s often a dance of progress and compromise. It’s a testament to the fact that every decision, every experiment, and every creative choice is a step towards the realization of our artistic aspirations.

Experimentation | Update# 38

As we ventured into the final phases of our animation project, the stakes were high, and time was of the essence. After meticulously crafting backgrounds that set the stage for our story and characters that leapt off the screen, it was time for the true wizardry to begin – compositing in After Effects and the finishing touches in Photoshop.

Before
After

The process might sound straightforward, but let me assure you, it was anything but that. The impending submission date loomed large, pushing us to find creative solutions, innovate on the fly, and experiment with every tool at our disposal. The goal? Achieving the desired effect that would elevate our animation to the level of professionalism we envisioned.

With backgrounds and characters in hand, the task was to seamlessly integrate them and create a harmonious visual narrative. This involved a meticulous dance of layers, effects, and blending modes in After Effects. The challenge? A submission deadline that was inching closer by the day, leaving little room for error.

Embracing the spirit of fearless experimentation, we embarked on a journey of trial and error. Every blending mode was put to the test, and every adjustment layer was scrutinized. It was a playground of creativity where we tinkered, adjusted, and fine-tuned to breathe life into our vision. And let me tell you, the process was as exhilarating as it was demanding.

It’s fascinating how the pressure of time can lead to breakthroughs. Amid the whirlwind of experimentation, we discovered a combination of blending modes that created the exact effect we had envisioned. It was like striking gold – a moment of triumph that validated every moment of hard work and every ounce of effort.

But the journey didn’t end there. With our composition in place, it was time to bring out the magic wand of Photoshop for those final touches. Cleaning up minor imperfections, enhancing details, and ensuring a seamless visual experience – each step was a labor of love that added finesse to the final product.

A colour palette I created to achieve the gloomy effect

The culmination of our efforts was a result that was nothing short of extraordinary. The animation not only met our aspirations but exceeded them. The effect we had achieved through experimentation and a touch of ingenuity looked professional, polished, and precisely what we had envisioned from the start.

As we step back and admire the finished animation, we’re reminded of the power of perseverance, the thrill of experimentation, and the magic that post-production tools like After Effects and Photoshop bring to our creative palette. The process was a reminder that constraints can fuel innovation and that every challenge is an opportunity to discover new avenues of creativity.

So, dear readers, remember that in the realm of animation, sometimes the best results emerge from the unlikeliest of experiments. The next time you’re faced with a daunting task, embrace the spirit of creativity and venture into the unknown – because you might just stumble upon the magic that’s waiting to transform your work into a masterpiece.

Experimentation (VFX) | Update #37

One of the main characters or elements of my animatic is lava. It is a very difficult thing to achieve the quality result while designing this. One way of doing is to use still image but I believe at this point it is well below my station to use this shortcut. Another way is to do it through CGI or frame by frame design development. In these cases I lack the skill and time so this route is also note feasible at this point.
At times I am just awestruck by the luck that I possess. I just keep on finding ways that can make any designers life easy. In line with this, I just found an aftereffects tutorial which taught me that you can use turbulent displacement and noise effects for this creation. Hence, the work continues.

From the very beginning I wanted to CGI the lava but it deemed a very daunting task and would have consumed a lot of my time. Instead of going through the pain staking process of learning a new software, I found a tutorial that turbulent noise can do the same trick.

I knew the effect was going to be heavy but I never anticipated it to be PC killer. Somehow I managed to get a render and converted the layer into 3d and basically alpha matted it onto the background. Masking over the tiny details and edges of the furniture was a tedious task but was necessary. [1}

Breakdown

Intially I just masked the layers and feathered it but it looked off, then I went and found about a little tool called Wave warp that gives the effect of a water and just like that my composited scene is born. [2}

Creative Development | Update # 36

Life in the animation realm is known for its thrilling unpredictability, and this week was no exception. As we geared up to bring our vision to life, fate threw us a curveball. Two of our team members pulled out at the eleventh hour, leaving just me and my incredible fiance to tackle the mountainous task ahead. The challenge? Completing a whopping 25 backgrounds within the next two weeks.

Now, let’s talk about those backgrounds. Oh, the intricate worlds we create to set the stage for our characters to shine. However, these magnificent landscapes come at a cost – a considerable amount of time, effort, and of course, rendering. As we kicked off this ambitious undertaking, we realized that each background was devouring a substantial 14 hours of our time. And with a tight deadline breathing down our necks, we knew we had to roll up our sleeves and channel our inner animation maniacs.

The pressure was palpable, and yet, there was an undeniable thrill in embracing this challenge head-on. It was like stepping into the eye of a creative storm – chaotic, exhilarating, and utterly immersive. We became a dynamic duo, fueling each other’s determination and passion as we raced against time to craft these intricate backgrounds.

Days blurred into nights, and coffee became our steadfast companion. The satisfaction of seeing each background take shape was unlike anything else. It wasn’t just about the visual aesthetics; it was about the essence we were infusing into every frame. The details, the colors, the mood – they all mattered, contributing to the bigger picture we were painting.

The journey was undoubtedly demanding, but it was also incredibly rewarding. As we watched those backgrounds come to life on the screen, there was a sense of accomplishment that words struggle to capture. The sleepless nights, the endless cups of coffee, the shared determination – they all converged to create an experience that was pure magic.

As drawing nature has not always been my best suit, I found trees to be a hassle but then just when I was about to give up I found some brushes for procreate and photoshop made for this very purpose and the result is as follows;

Amid the hustle and bustle, I found solace in the fact that challenges push us to discover untapped reservoirs of creativity and resilience. This week was a testament to the power of teamwork, determination, and a shared passion for animation. While the road was paved with obstacles, it was also adorned with triumphs that made every hurdle worthwhile.

As I reflect on this whirlwind week of animation mania, I’m reminded of the sheer joy that comes from pushing boundaries, defying odds, and creating something extraordinary. It’s a journey defined by dedication, fueled by passion, and bound together by the threads of creativity.
